Overview

Embark on a creative journey with our Beginner's Art Course: Drawing and Painting Basics, an immersive 8 weeks program designed for novice artists eager to explore the fundamentals of drawing and painting. Delve into the core principles of artistic expression, including line, shape, form, color, and composition. Guided by experienced instructors, participants will engage in hands-on exercises and projects to develop their skills in sketching, shading, perspective, and color mixing. Whether you're new to art or looking to refine your techniques, this course provides a supportive environment to nurture your creativity and build a strong foundation in drawing and painting.

Learning Objectives:

Weeks 1-2: Introduction to Drawing

Weeks 3-4: Composition and Perspective/ exploring different mediums

Weeks 5-6: Introduction to painting techniques

Weeks 7-8: Painting final project

Method(s) of Evaluation*

In the Beginner's Art Course: Drawing and Painting Basics, students' progress and skills will be assessed over the 8 weeks duration through a blend of practical evaluations and creative assignments. Practical assessments will involve the application of fundamental drawing and painting techniques taught in the course. Students will be evaluated based on their proficiency in executing these techniques, their creativity in applying them, and their grasp of foundational artistic concepts such as line, shape, and form. Moreover, creative projects will be assigned to encourage students to explore their artistic expression and experiment with different mediums. Instructors will offer constructive feedback and support to guide students in honing their skills and fostering their artistic development throughout the duration of the course.


Meet your professors

Angel Torrella

Angel Torrella is a versatile visual artist, educator, graphic designer, and a pioneering figure in the digital art scene. Angel Torrella possesses an extensive background that bridges traditional fine arts with modern digital publishing, AI, and graphic design. His career is marked by a transition from high-level academic leadership in Cuba to a role as a staple of the design faculty in Canada.

  1. Design Educator: He is a veteran instructor in the Graphic Design program at LaSalle College Vancouver, where he has taught since 2006. He also served as the Academic Coordinator from 2010 to 2017.

  2. Audio Visual Educator: At PAVI, he taught the foundational digital art and graphic design courses from 2006 to 2010, which he continues to lead today.

  3. Digital Art Pioneer: In 1989, Torrella became one of the first pioneers of digital art in Latin America. His current work often involves complex digital techniques, such as creating fractal art and digital matte painting.

  4. Professional Artist: He is the creator of the "Mandel Bay City" series, a collection of digital and traditional artworks that blend abstract, surrealist, and urban landscape styles. His work is characterized by high-quality archival materials and giclée printing.
