In this module, you will be taught how to document your ideas and designs through drawing and drafting for clients, contractors and your own reference by learning how to easily explore perspectives, sketching, and rendering to help visualise the space and make more informed design choices. Learners will support your documentation with a clear set of drawings to ensure your ideas on plans, elevations, and sections are interpreted correctly as you learn how to draw a floor plan, rearrange an existing space and plan a new layout for a renovation project.
Design and Decoration Detail
Implementing all the skills you have learned throughout the course, you will now create designs and specifications for a variety of interior spaces. Using, color, texture, furniture and finishes, you will learn how to create beautiful and functional rooms that are perfectly planned and well thought out. You’ll develop problem-solving skills, and learn how to communicate and work with clients, suppliers and tradespeople. You’ll learn how to create a budget and specification sheets, as well as the importance of branding and market yourself.
Materials, Fabrics, Components
You will discover the importance of ensuring quality finishes on the floor, walls, and ceiling to create a striking and functional backdrop for furnishings and window treatments. This course also explores lighting as one of the fundamental elements in the design of interiors. Students will learn the fundamental principles and techniques of working with lighting sources to create a desired impact on interior space. You will gain the product knowledge required to select and specify cost-effective finishes suitable for the intended end users to create a professional, beautiful and enduring interior space while you find out how to plan and project manage the sequence of floor, wall and ceiling finishes required at different stages of a project.
Portfolio and Professional Practices
This module will teach you the business of being an interior decorator. We’ll show you how to put together proposals and budgets, as well as honing your management skills. After this, you will be able to keep any project on schedule and on budget. You’ll hone your presentation skills, and create a portfolio and resume to showcase your work. In addition, you’ll learn how to promote and market your interior business, including creating business cards, a website, a social media profile as well as collaborating with other brands.

Set Decorating
This course introduces students to the world of interior decorating and how designers create spaces that are both creative and functional. You will learn the fundamental elements and principles of design as they relate to interiors. You will be guided through the design and decorating process, for both residential and commercial projects, from concept to completion. Students will learn how to create concepts for different spaces, while discovering how proportion, scale, colour and pattern produce harmony in design. You will learn how to observe, evaluate and make informed design decisions through analysing interior spaces and class discussions. Students will create dynamic inspiration and presentation boards to help support their ideas and concepts. They will then learn how to apply their ideas through space planning and furniture selection.
Learn to recognise architectural and decorative details influenced by ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian architecture, Neo-Classicism and more recent design styles and to incorporate these ideas into your designs, adding originality and creativity to your work. You will gain an appreciation of furniture design history and how it will continue to be an influence both in the present and the future. .

Meet your professors
Nikki Renshaw
Nikki started her design career in her native London, UK where she completed her Bachelor’s Degree at Central Saint Martin’s school of Art. After moving to Vancouver, BC, she enrolled in BCIT where she completed the Interior Design program, and has been teaching a variety of design courses at several institutions for the past decade. Nikki has extensive experience in television, where she hosted numerous shows back in London, as well as hosting a radio show for over a decade here in Vancouver. She is an expert in marketing as she has been running her own design company for many years and has a large social media presence with over 118,000 Instagram followers. She regularly contributes to design magazines on both sides of the globe and Elle France magazine included her Instagram account @englisheccentrichome in their feature on influencers to watch in 2024. Her work has been featured in Elle Canada, UK Cosmopolitan, Vancouver Magazine, Western Living and The Vancouver Sun as well as other publications. Currently, Nikki is the Program Director for the Costume, Global Fashion Marketing and Interior Design courses at the Cut, as well as running her design business and studying for a Master’s Degree at the Arts University of Bournemouth in the UK.
