Student Stories: Mallory Gosselin - Changing Career Paths Leads Her to The Cut

Mallory Gosselin was at a point in her design career where she knew a big change was needed. Her business Designs by Mallory had a significant impact on her life and she was ready to take that skill-set and all she learned to the next level. After examining all her options, Mallory decided a major location, to Vancouver, is what she needs to progress.

We spoke with Mallory about her journey so far and how registering in Level 1 Costume for Film & Television at The Cut will help her reach her career goals!

Who you are as a Designer?

I love to express my passion for textures, colours, print and creative intricacy. With an art background I enjoy incorporating different creative mediums into my collections whether it’s fabric painting or manipulation and even macrame. I design for the woman who isn’t afraid to express their individuality by pushing the boundaries of fashion and telling the world who they are through clothing.

Why did you choose The Cut for your education?

I chose The Cut for my education because I was very intrigued by the location and small class sizes. Already being outfitted with a diploma in Fashion Design and Techniques from George Brown College in Toronto, I wanted a program that was a continuation of my studies. The Cut provides courses that allow me to take what I’ve already learned both in school and the field and extend my knowledge in a similar field.

What are your plans upon graduating?

My plans upon graduating are to try and find a job within the costume field either in Vancouver, Toronto, or Montreal. My dream would be to work for the Montreal branch of Cirque Du Soleil. I think creating costumes for such beautiful and innovative productions would be inspiring. I would also love to travel for work for both film and television sets. Being able to experience a variety of cultures fascinates me and would open me up to so many new experiences and creative opportunities.

As a small business owner, how will this move affect your business?

I will have to temporarily stop production of my business for a little while. I love my business and Designs By Mallory has had such an impact on my life and my creativity. But I need to take a different path right now. That is why I’m having a big sale on my website designsbymallory.ca. I need to unload a bunch of my inventory to start this new chapter of my life.

What advantages do you feel relocating to the west coast will have on your business? More opportunity? New clients?
I think the advantage of a new perspective, new inspirations, and more opportunities will have a huge impact on my business. My career path is changing but I think I’ll be able to meld the two paths somehow. My background in fashion design, experience working for other designers, and owning my own business will for sure benefit me on this new road in costuming. I’m not exactly sure how they will connect just yet but the excitement of figuring that out has really lit a fire in my creativity.
