Nail Fundamentals and Safety Workshop

Grow your knowledge of the advanced knowledge in nail fundamentals, and work safety in this small hands-on class where you’ll enjoy one-on-one attention from professors with top-level industry experience.

 

Overview

This workshop is designed to provide aspiring nail professionals with a solid foundation in nail care and safety practices. Students will learn essential skills and knowledge required to ensure a safe and hygienic salon environment. The workshop covers salon safety protocols, including using and handling salon tools and equipment properly. Students will gain an understanding of sanitation procedures necessary to prevent the spread of infections and maintain cleanliness in the salon. In addition, the workshop explores nail anatomy, enabling students to identify different parts of the nail and understand their functions. It also delves into common nail disorders and diseases, equipping students with the ability to recognize and address these issues. Furthermore, the workshop highlights bacterial and fungal infections commonly encountered in nail care, emphasizing preventive measures and appropriate treatments. Lastly, the workshop introduces effective hand filing techniques and emphasizes the importance of ergonomics to promote the well-being of both nail technicians and clients. By the end of this workshop, students will have a solid grasp of the fundamental concepts of nail care, safety protocols, and the importance of maintaining a clean and healthy salon environment.

Required: High school graduation or equivalent or mature student status (19+)

 

Learning Objectives:

  • Master sanitation procedures: Learn proper sanitation techniques to maintain cleanliness and prevent the spread of infections in the salon.
  • Familiarize with nail anatomy: Identify and understand the various components of the nail, including the nail plate, cuticle, nail bed, and nail matrix.
  • Recognize and address nail disorders and diseases: Develop the ability to identify common nail disorders and diseases, such as fungal infections, and learn appropriate measures to address them.
  • Understand bacterial and fungal infections: Acquire knowledge of different types of bacterial and fungal infections relevant to nail care and learn preventive measures and treatment options.
  • Learn effective handfiling techniques: Master the art of handfiling nails to achieve desired shapes and smooth surfaces while minimizing damage to the natural nail.
  • Emphasize the importance of ergonomics: Understand the significance of maintaining proper posture and utilizing ergonomic tools and techniques to prevent repetitive strain injuries and promote overall well-being.
  • Promote a clean and healthy salon environment: Develop a strong sense of responsibility for maintaining a hygienic salon, ensuring the safety and well-being of both technicians and clients.

    The evaluation methods for the Nail Fundamentals and Safety Workshop may include quizzes to assess knowledge, practical demonstrations to evaluate skills in salon safety and sanitation procedures, case studies to analyze problem-solving abilities, skills assessments to measure proficiency in specific tasks, group discussions and presentations to evaluate understanding through participation, practical examinations to demonstrate knowledge and skills, and self-assessments for students to reflect on their learning. These assessments aim to gauge students' comprehension, application, and progress in the workshop's covered topics.
     

    Meet your professors

    Heidi C

    Heidi has been a makeup and hair artist in Vancouver since 2010 after leaving her job as a flight attendant. Her journey started from a makeup counter to a bridal to commercial. She has worked hundreds of weddings, has been published over three dozen times and is currently agency represented. She worked for many brands on the market, was a trainer with a French luxury brand and is currently a studio makeup artist with another.

    Iki Lee

    Iki has been a professional Makeup artist and hair stylist in Vancouver since 2019. After graduating from Blanche Macdonald, Iki has developed well-rounded makeup skills in beauty, editorial, body painting, and special effects. Iki takes pride in getting her clients camera-ready and flawless for their big events – whether on-set or on a wedding day, she honed her skills working for production, fashion shows, photoshoots, and weddings. Iki is currently a Union member of IATSE 891 and ACFC 2020 and the Head of the Makeup Department for JoyTV. Her body painting work has been exhibited nationwide, including the Museum of Anthropology (UBC), Telephone Gallery (Vancouver), The Bows (Calgary), and Maison Des Artistes Visuels Francophones (Winnipeg). She has also worked on numerous fashion campaigns includes: Casca, Understance, Thom., Montecristo, Vancouver Fashion Week, Vancouver Indigenous Fashion Week, and the list goes on.    With all those experiences, she finds her true passion is using makeup to tell a story and design a character via the aesthetic and artistry details.
