Learn how to design and manufacture the technical apparel used for sports, recreation, survival and protection wear, with a focus on the performance properties of various fabrics. Perfect advanced pattern making techniques and skills used in the construction of activewear.

Looking to learn the basics of the captivating world of fashion? The Cut offers you a variety of two-week intensive workshops designed to maximize your industry knowledge within a minimum time frame. In these hands-on workshops, students will be immersed in all facets of the fashion business. In readings, lectures and class discussions, students are taught by industry professionals in small group settings, receiving first-class learning in a real-life business environment, using state of the art digital platforms as well as hands-on hard skill applications. Each class comprises of two levels at 16 hours per week, for a total of 32 hours. Pre-requisites for each class are outlined in each specific course. Acquire the skills you need to reach your academic and professional goals or complement your current full-time diploma or degree program, or simply build a competitive portfolio for graduate program applications to prepare for advanced study.

 

Pattern Making Technical Apparel

Learn the art of technical apparel design and manufacturing with an emphasis on pattern making that enhances the properties of the fabrics best suited to sports, recreation, survival and protection. You’ll master advanced pattern making techniques, encounter new fibres, fabrics and trims, and discover how to use specific construction techniques to build high performance garments.

Required: Basic Pattern Making (Two Week Intensive) or equivalent. Intermediate knowledge of sewing and an understanding of how to convert patterns from paper to garments.

 

You Will Learn:

  • To identify textiles for technical purpose and function
  • Basic pattern making terminology
  • To understand fit by making pattern and fit sample and applying adjustments
  • How to draft and sew your designs
  • How to manipulate patterns to better fit and execute your design

    • Please arrive to class on time
    • If you’re going to miss class for any reason, please email in advance to let us know. If you fail to report your absence within 24 hours, your class will be considered a missed session and no make up class will be provided
    • Classes with 3 or less students will run for 3 hours each day

    Meet your professors

    Frederick Fung

    Frederick has over 10 years of teaching experience in clothing design and realization at Visual College of Art and Design (VCAD), and Art Institute of Vancouver (now is LaSalle College Vancouver). Frederick has worked for several Vancouver based Label companies as a pattern-maker, sample maker, textile manager Frederick owned Frederick Fung label and small production selling in 4 locations in Vancouver Along with six years of textile research and evaluation in different European and Asian countries Frederick's master level pattern skills combined with his global work experience, makes him an incredible instructor and mentor.

    Komal Chharahhan

    Komal Chharahhan, founder and creative director of Ginni Gill, is an Indo - Canadian fashion designer. Her love for garment making began at the age of 13 when her grandmother introduced her into the world of sewing by making Indian wear for special occasions. Her passion for learning different techniques soon turned her newfound love into a business. Fashion design naturally became a creative outlet for Komal to experiment with. After immigrating to Canada at the age of 19 she started building her drawing skill set. Soon after that she began her fashion career at the Visual College of Art Design where she studied fashion design with a speciality in fashion marketing. With a keen interest in pattern making and garment construction, Komal has acquired a range of expertise. Adept in technical skills such as drawing, computer- aided design and pattern drafting Komal has gained a love for teaching all that she has learned. Komal began her teaching career in fashion design at the Cut Design Academy in June of 2022 in Vancouver, BC.
